Southern
Appalachian Raptor Research (SARR) has
conducted three seasons of MAPS at Big
Bald Banding Station on the Cherokee
National Forest and two seasons of
MAPS at Tessentee
Bottomland Preserve in Macon
County, NC. The MAPS program at
Tessentee serves as a pilot bird
monitoring and education program for Land Trust
for the Little Tennessee (LTLT), a land
conservation organization in the upper
Little Tennessee River valley.
SARR receives support for the MAPS
programs from the Appalachian
Trail Conservancy, Coweeta
LTER, the U.S. Forest Service,
and private donations.

MAPS
(Monitoring Avian Productivity and
Survivorship) is a nationwide program
coordinated by the Institute
for Bird Populations to
monitor productivity, survivorship,
and population trends of breeding
birds throughout North America.

MAPS is a
volunteer program that includes many
duties such as setting up nets, picking
and banding birds, birding surveys,
vegetation surveys, paperwork and data
management. Data samples are
taken once every ten days during
late spring and summer. The MAPS banding
day is from sunrise to ~noon (6 hrs). If

any of the sessions during the summer,

Volunteers and visitors are welcome to
attend and contribute in any way
possible, no matter their experience
level. Please check the website
