Southern Appalachian Raptor
Research (SARR) is a volunteer group of
citizens passionate about birds of prey. SARR
operates raptor trapping, owl banding,
hawkwatch, monitoring and public education
efforts at Big Bald Banding Station and
functions as a non-profit 501(c)(3)
project.
MISSION STATEMENT:
SARR is dedicated to the conservation and
protection
of birds of prey in the southern
Appalachians
through monitoring, education and field
research.
Raptor trapping at Big Bald operates from 10:00
until 1-2 hours before sunset, from the first
week in September to early November. Migrating
raptors are captured, fitted with a U.S. Fish
and Wildlife metal leg band, measured, assessed
for health condition and then released unharmed.
Processing of birds is in compliance with the
North American Raptor Banders guide and
sanctioned by permit from the U.S. Bird Banding
Lab.
