Southern Appalachian Raptor Research (SARR) is a volunteer group of citizens passionate about birds of prey. SARR operates raptor trapping, owl banding, hawkwatch, monitoring and public education efforts at Big Bald Banding Station and functions as a non-profit 501(c)(3) project.

MISSION STATEMENT:
SARR is dedicated to the conservation and protection
of birds of prey in the southern Appalachians
through monitoring, education and field research.

Raptor trapping at Big Bald operates from 10:00 until 1-2 hours before sunset, from the first week in September to early November. Migrating raptors are captured, fitted with a U.S. Fish and Wildlife metal leg band, measured, assessed for health condition and then released unharmed. Processing of birds is in compliance with the North American Raptor Banders guide and sanctioned by permit from the U.S. Bird Banding Lab.
